About <time>

Posted In Thoughts By Paul Maloney

If you hadn’t heard already the <time> element has been temporarily removed and replaced with the element <data>

I’m torn on the decision really, from a semantic and accessibility point of view the element is very appealing, but I can’t honestly say I have seen it used in a way that has really made me stand up and say “wow this element is awesome!”

For CSS styling the element would have been pretty useful, but again how many people would do something crazy with the styling of a date or time? The <data> element although not as semantic as the <time> element will do the job and can be used for a variety of other uses where the <time> element basically serves one purpose.

There is mounting pressure from the community on this subject of late and as it’s only been “temporarily removed” I honestly feel it will be brought back and due to the stink caused by its removal it will surely be a well used element from that point forward.

What’s your thought of it’s temporary removal and would you like to see it back?
